听力原文:Man: And today I'm talking to Angela Morgan. Angela, what made you decide to fly round the world in a helicopter?
Woman: People often ask me why I decided to do it but I'm surprised they don't ask 'Why did you wait so long?' because I'm 57 now! I'm sorry I didn't do it years ago, because it was such a wonderful experience. But the main purpose for going was to collect £500,000 for sick children by getting different companies to pay us money for each kilometre that we flew.
Man: And now everyone calls you the flying grandmother!
Woman: Yes, the thing about growing older is that you don't feel any different inside, so
you have to do as much as you can while you can. I'm healthy, and my own children are grown up, so I was free to go.
Man: And what about preparing for the trip?
Woman: Well, it took five months to plan. I was going to go with my husband, but he couldn't take time off work. Instead I made the trip with my flying teacher who became a great friend while she was teaching me to fly three years ago. I passed my flying test after two weeks; found it quite easy.
Man: And what was the trip like?
Woman: It was really exciting flying over so many different countries. The only thing was that we weren't able to spend much time sightseeing because we only stopped to get water and to camp. We took very little with us, but we did have tents and cooking things to use at night. We had to spend two days in Thailand because of an engine problem, but that was the longest we spent anywhere. Fortunately nothing else went wrong, so we just kept on going after that.
Man: What did you enjoy most about the trip?
Woman: The most wonderful thing about flying was seeing the differences in the countryside as we flew across 26 countries in 97 days. We flew over oceans and close to mountains; sometimes it was quite frightening, but we didn't travel when it was dark. We spent several nights camping in the desert and the sky was just full of stars. I made a video of the trip; you'll see it in a minute.
Man: Was there anything that you missed while you were away?
Woman: Well, to my surprise I didn't miss going to work or going out to restaurants or films. The most difficult thing was sitting still all the time; I normally play tennis and swim several times a week, so I started to feel very unfit. I missed hot water and proper showers sometimes too, but not as much as I thought I would!
The main reason for Angela's trip was to
A.make money for her business.
B.make money for other people.
C.have an exciting adventure.

Flying the Hypert Skies
A little airplane has given new meaning to the term "going hyper. "
The Hyper-X recently broke the record for air-breathing jet planes when it traveled at a hypersonic speed of seven times the speed of sound. That's about 5,000 miles per hour. At this speed, you'd get around the world -- flying along the equator (赤道) -- in less than 5 hours.
The Hyper-X is an unmanned, experimental aircraft just 12 feet long. It achieves hypersonic (超音速的) speed using a special sort of engine known as a scramjet. It may sound like something from a comic book, but engineers have been experimenting with scramjets since the 1960s.
For an engine to burn fuel and produce energy, it needs oxygen. A jet engine, like those on passenger airplanes, gets oxygen from the air. A rocket engine typically goes faster but has to carry its own supply of oxygen. A scramjet (紧急刹车) engine goes as fast as a rocket, but it doesn't have to carry its own oxygen supply. A scramjet's special design allows it to obtain oxygen from the air that flows through the engine. And it does so without letting the fast-moving air put out the combustion (燃烧) flames. However, a scramjet engine works properly only at speeds greater than five times the speed of sound. A booster rocket carried the Hyper-X to an altitude of about 100,000 feet for its test flight. The aircraft's record-beating flight lasted just 11 seconds. Although the little plane's self-powered flight lasted only 11 seconds, that brief journey on March 27 makes a major milestone on the way to a new breed of very fast airplanes, comments Werner J. A. Dahm of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In the future, engineers predict, airplanes equipped with scramjet engines could transport cargo quickly and cheaply to the brink of space. Such hypersonic jets could potentially carry passengers anywhere in the world in just a few hours.
Out of the three experimental Hyper-X aircrafts built for NASA, only one is now left. The agency has plans for another 11-second hypersonic flight, this time at 10 times the speed of the sound.
The Hyper-X broke the record because
A.it was the first air-breathing jet plane.
B.it flew along the equator.
C.it flew at speeds smaller than five times the speed of sound.
D.it traveled at a supersonic speed.

【C1】______ nearly a hundred years of powered flight, scientists are still trying to figure out how birds fly.
Researchers have learned that the slapping noise pigeons make when they suddenly take off is the sound of super charged lift. They call it the "clap fling" effect.
Here at SRI International scientists try to duplicate the pigeons' thrust. A flashing strobe reveals the secret.
Scott Stanford, a scientist at SRI, says, You re looking at the clap fling effect, where the two wings will come together and peel apart 【C2】______ each other, thus augmenting lift 【C3】______ drawing air from the top to the bottom. "
This mechanical bug won't get off the ground. 【C4】______ its flapping wings demonstrate a potential propulsion system for robotic birds: man-made rubbery muscle.
Roy Kornbluh works at SRI. "There, I'm turning the voltage on and off, and you can see when the voltage is on, the material is larger 【C5】______ when the voltage is off."
Super computers show high-speed airflows over supersonic aircraft.
But scientists have only begun to see how air flows 【C6】______ really low speeds.
Professor Max Platzer of the Naval Postgraduate School, says, "The flapping wing is generating a thrust, this way, this is the basic physics of the phenomenon."
It's pelicans--not pigeons--the Navy is looking at. The Navy is looking at the smooth easy flight of pelicans low over water--called "ground effect." Researchers at the Naval Postgraduate School are trying to imitate the pelican's efficiency.
Assistant Professor Kevin Jones of the Naval Postgraduate School says, " 【C7】______ flapping the wings, symmetrically, we're 【C8】______ effect imitating ground effect. We now have the same feature a bird sees when it's flying, over a ground plane."
An electric motor drives the flapping wings. Researchers here are working 【C9】______ ways to beam power to the tiny bird.
David Jenn of the Naval Postgraduate School says, "There's no battery inside of here, so we're going to set this inside the radar beam, and the energy is extracted from the radar beam and will be used to propel the motor."
Scientists are learning it's one thing to build an airplane, 【C10】______ quite another to build a bird.

The Pakistani president, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, announced here today that a delegation of Pakistani officials would fly to the Taliban's headquarters in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar Monday to renew demands that the militia surrender Saudi fugitive Osama Bin Laden.
U.S. officials have named Bin Laden, who has been given shelter by the Taliban rulers in Afghanistan, as the prime suspect in Tuesday's terrorist attacks in Washington and New York.
"We are aware of the gravity of the situation and know that in the lives of nations, such situations do arise that require making important decisions", Musharraf said at a meeting with Pakistani newspaper editors.
The Taliban's leader, Mohammad Omar, has refused to give up Bin Laden, claiming he is not responsible for the U.S. attacks.
"The Pakistan government is leaning on the Taliban government to hand over Osama to save this entire region from catastrophe", said Najam Sethi, editor of the weekly newspaper Friday Times, who participated in the meeting with Musharraf. "I am not sure whether there is much chance of that happening, but the pressure is on from the Pakistan government".
Pakistan has been a key supporter of the Taliban, which controls more than 90 percent of Afghanistan and has enforced a strict interpretation of Islamic law in the country.
Omar, the Taliban leader, today convened an emergency meeting of clerics(圣职人员) in the Afghan capital, Kabul. "As regards the possible attack by America on the sacred soil of Afghanistan, veteran honorable clerics should come to Kabul for a sharia decision", Omar said in a statement broadcast on the Taliban's Radio Shariat today. Sharia is Islamic law.
Omar, who reportedly left Ms. Kandahar headquarters several days ago in anticipation of a U.S. attack, asked Afghans to pray and read the Koran to meet what he called a "test", according to the statement. He indicated he would not attend the meeting of clerics, though he reportedly met with a small group of senior clerics today.
The Pakistan-based Afghan Islamic Press reported today it had received a statement from Bin Laden, dispatched by an aide from an undisclosed location in Afghanistan, in which he denied involvement in last week's attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
"I am residing in Afghanistan", the statement said, "I have taken an oath of allegiance to Omar which does not allow me to do such things from Afghanistan. We have been blamed in the past, but we were not involved".
What is the mission of the delegation of Pakistani officials to Afghanistan?
A.To surrender Saudi fugitive Osama Bin Laden.
B.To convey the demands of the U.S. on the Americans' decision of an air-raid on Afghanistan.
C.To tell Taliban leaders to hand over Bin Laden.
D.To advise Taliban leaders to get ready for the Americans' unexpected air attacks.

The year was 1932.Amelia Earhart was flying alone from North America to England in a small single-engined aeroplane. At midnight, several hours after she had left Newfoundland, she ran into bad weather. To make things worse, her altimeter (高度表) failed and she didn't know how high she was flying. At night, and in a storm, a pilot is in great difficulty without an altimeter. At times, her plane nearly plunged into the sea.
Just before dawn, there was further trouble.Amelia noticed flames coming from the engine.Would she be able to reach land? There was nothing to do except to keep going and to hope.
In the end, Amelia Earhart did reach Ireland, and for the courage she had shown, she was warmly welcomed in England and Europe. When she returned to the United States, she was honored by President Hoover at a special dinner in the White House. From that time on, Amelia Earhart was famous.
What was so important about her flight? Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly the Atlantic Ocean alone, and she had set a record of fourteen hours and fifty-six minutes.
In the years that followed, Amelia Earhart made several flights across the United States, and on each occasion she set a new record for flying time.Amelia Earhart made these flights to show that women had a place in aviation and that air travel was useful.

Man has always wanted to fly. Some of the greatest men in history have thought about the problem. One of these, for example, was the great Italian artist, Leonardo da Vinci(达·芬奇).In the sixteenth century he made designs for machines that would fly.But they were never built.Throughout history, other less famous men have wanted to fly.An example was a man in England 800 years ago.He made a pair of wings from chicken feathers. Then he fixed them to his body and jumped into the air from a tall building. He did not fly very far.Instead,he fell to the ground and broke every bone in his body.
The first real steps took place in France, in 1783.Two brothers, the Montgolfiers, made a very large “hot air balloon”.They knew that hot air rises. Why not fill a balloon with it?The balloon was made of cloth and paper. In September of that year, the King and Queen of France came to see the balloon. They watched it carry the very first air passengers into the sky.The passengers were a sheep and a chicken. We do not know how they felt about the trip. But we do know that the trip lasted eight minutes and that the animals landed safely. Two months later, two men did the same thing. They rose above Paris in a balloon of the same kind.Their trip lasted twenty-five minutes and they travelled about eight kilometers.
