A new kind of machine【21】to take the place of humans. These machines can do jobs that are too dangerous for humans.【22】, they are being developed to work in nuclear power centers, deep waters and outer space.
This is how the new machines work. A machine is placed in an area far away from the person who controls it. The person wears a special hard hat with tiny television screens. The screens【23】the person see and hear exactly what the machine is seeing and hearing. This gives the person the feeling of being in the same place【24】the machine. The person controls the machine. The machine follows the person's movements exactly. If the person raises his right arm, the machine raises the right arm, too. This means an【25】worker can do a dangerous job while【26】in a safe place. For example, a person can direct the machine【27】a bomb【28】gooing near the bomb himself.
The new machines are not exactly【29】robots. Robots are controlled by a computer. The new machines are controlled by a person. The new machines are called teleoperators. 听力原文:Conversations are really kind of interesting. I guess it's a kind of hobby of mine to listen to conversations that I can hear in public. It is amazing how different the style, or the tone or the content of different conversations can be and to listen to the differences in the language that people use when they speak to different people.
If you're ever in a bookstore or department store, it's interesting to hear how the same salesperson talks to different people. There're other interesting places to listen to conversations too. I think, and one place that I've found is on bus trips. People often talk to each other as if no one else were there. I guess they think people can't hear their conversations.
Recently I was on a bus, and I was listening to a conversation of two people behind me. I can't really say I was listening. I guess it would have been hard not to hear it. it was amusing to listen to the two people, though, because they were playing a kind of language, uh, word game about states and state capitals. One person would say the name of the state, and the other person would say the name of the capital.
It sounds like a kind of simple game that doesn't involve much language, and you wouldn't think that it would involve very much conversation, but actually this wasn't the case because they were playing this game. They continued to compliment one another and talk about how much they knew about history and how many of the other things that they could or couldn't remember about those places from their trips or from their reading. It was really kind of fun to listen to them.

There are different ways in which people try to deal with the problem of energy. One way is the greater production of common energy sources, such as coal, oil and gas. The trouble with these sources, however, is that they are not renewable.
Another way is energy conservation (节能 ), which means using energy more efficiently (有效地 ). In some very cold countries people build special houses to save energy. They place materials between the inside and the outside of the walls of the house to keep the cold out and the warmth in. The house is heated by the lights, the body heat of the people and the other equipment in it.
Finally, renewable energy sources are used even though they are often expensive to develop. One form. of these is geothermal energy. In certain parts of the world the temperature of the earth increases thirty degrees centigrade with each kilometer down. At six kilometers, therefore, it rises to nearly two hundred degrees. To get the heat, water is pumped (压;抽 ) down into the rocks and back up to the surface. Heat from the earth is already used in certain countries.

Instead of trying to reduce the discontent felt, try to raise the level or quality of the discontent. Perhaps the most that can be hoped for is to have high-order discontent in today' s society, discontent about things that really matter.【76】 Rather than evaluating programs in terms of how happy they make people, how satisfied those people become, programs must be evaluated in terms of the quality of the discontent they engender. For example, if consultant wants to assess, whether or not an organization is healthy, he doesn' t ask, "Is there an absence of complaints?" but rather, "What kinds of complaints are there?"
【77】 Instead of trying to make gradual changes in small increments, make big changes. After all, big changes are relatively easier to make than are small ones. Some people assume that the way to bring about improvement is to make the change small enough so that nobody will notice it. This approach has never worked, and one can' t help but wonder why such thinking continues. Everyone knows how to resist small changes; they do it all the time. If, however, the change is big enough, resistance can' t be mobilized against it.【78】 Management can make a sweeping organizational change, but just let a manager, try to change someone' s desk from here to there, and see the great difficulty he encounters. All change is resisted, so the question is how can the changes be made big enough so that they have a chance of succeeding?
Buck Minster Fuller has said that instead of reforms society needs new forms; e. g. , in order to reduce traffic accidents, improve automobiles and highways instead of trying to improve drivers. The same concept should be applied to human relations. There' s a need to think in terms of social architecture, and to provide arrangements among people that evoke what they really want to see in them selves.【79】 Mankind takes great pains with physical architecture, and is beginning to concern it self with the design of systems in which the human being is a component. But most of these designs are only for safety, efficiency, or productivity. System designs are not made to affect those aspects of life people care most about such as family life, romance, and esthetic experiences.【80】 Social technology as well as physical technology need to be applied in making human arrangements that will transcend anything mankind has yet experienced. People need not be victimized by their environments; they can be fulfilled by them.

听力原文: It would seem that there are three kinds of travel books. The first are those that give a personal, subjective account of travels which the author has actually made himself. If they are informative and have a good index then they can be useful to you when you are planning your travels. The second kind are those books whose purpose is to give a purely objective description of things to be done and seen. If a well-read, cultured person has written such a book then it is even more useful. It can be classified as a selective guide book. The third kind are those books which are called "a guide" to some place or another. If they are good, they will, in addition to their factual information, give an analysis or an interpretation. Like the first kind they can be inspiring and entertaining. But their primary function is to assist the reader who wishes to plan in the most practical way.
Whatever kind of travel book you choose you must make sure that it does not describe everything as "marvelous'', "fabulous" or "magical". You must also note its date of publication because travel is a very practical affair and many things change quickly in this century. Finally, you should make sure that the contents are well presented and easy to find.
How many kinds of travel books are mentioned in the passage?
A.Two.
B.Three.
C.Four.
D.Five.

Saying they can no longer ignore the rising prices of health care, some of the most influential medical groups in the nation are recommending that doctors weigh the costs, not just the effectiveness of treatment, as they make decisions about patient care.
The shift, little noticed outside the medical establishment but already controversial inside it, suggests that doctors are starting to redefine their roles, from being concerned exclusively about individual patients to exerting influence on how healthcare dollars are spent.
In practical terms, the new guidelines being developed could result in doctors choosing one drug over another for cost reasons or even deciding that a particular treatment-at the end of life, for example-is too expensive. In the extreme, some critics have said that making treatment decisions based on cost is a form. of rationing.
Traditionally, guidelines have heavily influenced the practice of medicine, and the latest ones are expected to make doctors more conscious of the economic consequences of their decisions, even though there’s no obligation to follow them. Medical society guidelines are also used by insurance companies to help determine reimbursement(报销)policies.
Some doctors see a potential conflict in trying to be both providers of patient care and financial overseers.
"There should be forces in society who should be concerned about the budget, but they shouldn’t be functioning simultaneously as doctors," said Dr. Martin Samuels at a Boston hospital. He said doctors risked losing the trust of patients if they told patients, "I’m not going to do what I think is best for you because I think it’s bad for the healthcare budget in Massachusetts."
Doctors can face some grim trade-offs. Studies have shown, for example, that two drugs are about equally effective in treating macular degeneration, an eye disease. But one costs $50 a dose and the other close to $2,000. Medicare could save hundreds of millions of dollars a year if everyone used the cheaper drug. Avastin, instead of the costlier one, Lucentis.
But the Food and Drug Administration has not approved Avastin for use in the eye, and using it rather than the alternative, Lucentis, might carry an additional, although slight, safety risk. Should doctors consider Medicare’s budget in deciding what to use?
"I think ethically(在道德层面上)we are just worried about the patient in front of us and not trying to save money for the insurance industry or society as a whole," said Dr. Donald Jensen.
Still, some analysts say that there’s a role for doctors to play in cost analysis because not many others are doing so. "In some ways," said Dr. Daniel Sulmasy, "it represents a failure of wider society to take up the issue."
57.What do some most influential medical groups recommend doctors do?
A.Reflect on the responsibilities they are supposed to take.
B.Pay more attention to the effectiveness of their treatments.
C.Take costs into account when making treatment decisions.
D.Readjust their practice in view of the cuts in health care.
58.What were doctors mainly concerned about in the past?
A.Specific medicines to be used.
B.Professional advancement.
C.Effects of medical treatment.
D.Patients’ trust.
59.What may the new guidelines being developed lead to?
A.The redefining of doctors’ roles.
B.Conflicts between doctors and patients.
C.Overuse of less effective medicines.
D.The prolonging of patients’ suffering.
60.What risk do doctors see in their dual role as patient care providers and financial overseers?
A.They may be involved in a conflict of interest.
B.They may be forced to divide their attention.
C.They may have to use less effective drugs.
D.They may lose the respect of patients.
61.What do some experts say about doctors’ involvement in medical cost analysis?
A.It may add to doctors’ already heavy workloads.
B.It will help to save money for society as a whole.
C.It results from society’s failure to tackle the problem.
D.It raises doctors’ awareness of their social responsibilities.
