听力原文: A new study says millions of the world' s children continue to live in poverty, disease and despair. VOA's correspondent Bmeck Ardery reports on the annual report from UNICEF, the United Nations Children' s Fund.
The report acknowledges great progress has been made in the eradication of certain childhood diseases such as polio and measles. However, it emphasizes that for millions of the world' s children, armed conflicts, disease and forced labor continue to take a heavy toll. Susan Surandon, the American film actress who is recently appointed UNICEF special representative, told reporters that 3 main factors are endangering the lives and futures of the world' s children. "Poverty is killing our children; HIV is killing our children, disproportionately in sub-Saharan Africa; armed conflict is killing our children. And when I say killing, I mean their bodies and their souls their futures, our futures." Ms. Surandon cited statistics which show that in the last decade 2 million children died in wars, 6 million were disabled as the result of armed conflicts, and 14 million have been orphaned by the disease AIDS. A special focus in this year' s UNICEF report is on the rights of adolescents. No longer children in the traditional sense, the report says adolescents still need positive support and guidance and the opportunity to finish school. Breck Ardery, VOA News, at the United Nations.
According to the UNICEF report, great progress has been made in the protection of world' s children from______.
A.some childhood diseases
B.AIDS
C.wars
D.forced labor

Scientists have long believed one way to stop the Earth’s atmosphere from warming is by planting more trees. The idea is that more trees will take in or absorb some of the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is a gas released by cars, factories and other human activities. The gas traps heat in the Earth’s atmosphere, which warms the planet. However, two new studies have found that trees may not be as helpful in reducing carbon dioxide as had been thought.
The first study was done at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Researchers pumped extra carbon dioxide into a test area where pine trees were growing. The trees grew thirty-four percent faster during the first three years. However, in time, the trees slowed to about their normal growth rate. The scientists say this is because trees need other nutrients, such as nitrogen.
In the second study, researchers from Duke and Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine examined the soil around trees. They discovered that as the leaves broke down into the soil, all the carbon was not trapped in the soil. Much of it was released into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide.
The findings of the two studies were published last month in Nature magazine. They suggest there is limited value in planting trees to reduce the carbon dioxide pollution in the atmosphere.
Forest planting has been a part of negotiations on a world agreement to reduce greenhouse gases that scientists believe cause global warming. The United States, Canada, Japan and some other industrial countries have supported the idea. But this new research suggests the idea is not as effective as environmental activists had thought. Scientist Ram Oren of Duke University led the study on tree growth. He says that earlier estimates on the ability of forests to absorb carbon dioxide were overly hopeful.
Some scientists not involved in the studies say the research provides some of the first evidence on how trees react to carbon dioxide. Other scientists say the research disputes a belief among some coal and power companies. The companies say that rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will not create harmful global warming. Instead, they say it will increase forests and other plants.
What is the purpose of this passage?
A.Introduce some new ideas about the relationship between trees and carbon dioxide.
B.Introduce recent condition of global industrial pollution.
C.Call on people to plant more trees to reduce greenhouse gases.
D.Point out that power companies should be responsible for the rising levels of carbon dioxide.

Babies who are breast-fed may be more likely to be successful in life, a new study published Tuesday suggests. The study followed more than 3,000 babies into adulthood in Brazil. The researchers found those who were breast-fed scored slightly higher in intelligence tests in their 30s, stayed in school longer and earned more money than those who were given formula(配方奶粉).
“Breast-feeding not only has short-term benefits, but also breast-feeding has long-term benefits, ” says Bernardo Lessa Horta of the Federal University of Pelotas in Brazil, who led the study being published in The Lancet Global Health.
Doctors have long known that breast-feeding can be good for a baby’s health. This is especially true in poor countries, where water can be contaminated. For instance, a baby given formula in developing countries is 14 times more likely to die in the first six months than one who’s breast-fed. In the U.S., some research has suggested that breast-feeding may raise a baby’s IQ(智商)by a few points. But a recent study with siblings(兄弟姐妹)found little advantage to breast-feeding.
Horta says these previous studies didn’t follow children into adulthood to see if breast-feeding had long-term effects. So Horta analyzed data collected from 3,493 volunteers he and his colleagues have been following since birth. They are now in their 30s. First, the researchers gave the subjects IQ tests. Those who were breast-fed for 12 months or more had IQ test scores that were 3.76 points higher than those who were breast-fed for less than one month, the team found.
When Horta and his colleagues looked at how much education the subjects had gotten and how much money they were making, they also found a clear difference: Those who were breast-fed the longest stayed in school for about an extra year and had monthly salaries that were about a third higher.
