Electronic pets are sweeping China's large cities as they have elsewhere in Asia, as increasing numbers of young people go crazy about the imitation chickens, dogs and dinosaurs(恐龙).
The electronic pets, about the size of a watch, have the same qualifies as living animals. They eat, sleep and they can feel happy, angry and sad. When they are hungry, they call their owners to feed them. If the owners do not respond quickly, they get angry and refuse to eat. If the owners continuously neglect them, they refuse to eat and play with their owners until they die.
These chickens, dogs and dinosaurs are happy when their owners stop working to play games with them or feed them snacks. However, if they are fed too many snacks, they will get fat and sick.
By raising an electronic dog, animal lovers can be somewhat satisfied. However, as with real pets, not everyone loves these electronic animals.
Invented in Japan, electronic pets are gaining great popularity in Asian countries.

听力原文:M: You think young people are given too much freedom nowadays, and that, as a result, they lost respect for their parents and their elders generally.
W: I don't think so. My parents never interfered with my plans too much. They advised me but never forced me to do anything I didn't want to do. I was allowed to take up the career I wanted. I think I respect and love them more for this.
M: Are you quite independent of them now?
W: Yes. As soon as I left high school and started my college studies as an elementary school teacher, I became independent financially. I have a government grant which is enough for my keep. But I still stay with them a lot as you know.
M: You seem very close to your parents.
W: I am. I know that many young people today say they have nothing in common with their parents. But I'm rather lucky because I get on very well with mine. What about you?
M: Well, we value family life very much in my country. I'm very fond of my family, but I don't always get on very well with them. They try to control me too much.
W: But they allowed you to come to study in England on your own.
M: Yes, but only after a lot of persuasion. Your parents treat you as an adult. Mine treat me as a child.
W: As I said, I'm lucky. Some English parents are like yours. They interfere too much and they're out of sympathy with our generation.

Crime is a very serious problem in Britain. One sort of crime which particularly worries people is juvenile delinquency—that is, crimes committed by young people. For some years juvenile delinquency had been increasing. There are two main sorts of juvenile crimes: stealing and violence. Most people do not understand why young people commit these crimes. There are, I think, a large number of different reasons.
These crimes are not usually committed by people who are poor or in need. Young people often dislike and hate the adult world. They will do things to show that they are rebels. Also in Britain today it is easier for young people to commit crimes because they have more freedom to go where they like and more money to do what they like.
There are two other possible causes which are worth mentioning. More and more people in Britain live in large towns. In a large town no one knows who anyone else is or where they live. But in the village I come from crimes are rare because everyone knows everyone else.
Although it is difficult to explain, I think the last cause is very important. Perhaps there is something with our society which encourages violence and crime. It is a fact that all the time children are exposed to films and reports about crime and violence. Many people do not agree that this influences the young people, but I think that young people are very much influenced by the society they grow in. I feel that the fault may be as much with our whole society as with these young people.
