One of the well-known of American writers is Samuel Clemens, whose pen name is Mark Twain. Born in 1835, Twain grew up in the Mississippi River town of Hannibal, Missouri. As did many other boys of his day, Twain dreamed of traveling on river boats and of someday becoming a riverboat pilot. Twain used his memories of the life of a river town in his two most famous books, Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer.
As a young man, Twain held many jobs. He was a printer, a good miner, and, for a time, he was a riverboat pilot. During his pilot days, he adopted the name Mark Twain. This was a term used by the boatmen to mean that the water measured two fathoms, or twelve feet, which was deep enough for safe passage.
Finally Twain became a successful writer. He traveled a great deal, writing and speaking, and became very popular both in the United States and in Europe.
Twain's style. of writing was simple and direct. Among the things he wrote about were superstitious(迷信的)people and people who were easily fooled. He used his unusual gift for humor to write about many things of importance.
Generally speaking, this article is about ______.
A.a riverboat pilot

This past fall semester, at Duke University, there were two students who were taking Organic Chemistry. They did pretty well on all of the tests and the midterms and labs, etc., such that going into the final they had a solid “A” . There two friends were so confident going into the final that the weekend before finals’ week, even though the Chemistry final was on Monday, they decided to go up to the University of Virginia and have a party with some friends up there. So they did this and had a great time. However, with the aftereffects of alcohol and everything, they overslept all day Sunday and didn’t make it back to Duke until early Monday morning.
Rather than taking the final then, what they did was to find Professor Aldric after the final and explain to him why they missed the final. They told him that they went up to UVA for the weekend, and had planned to come back in time to study, but they had a flat tire (爆胎)on the way back and didn’t have a spare and couldn’t get help for a long time and so were late getting back to campus.
Aldric thought this over and then agreed that they could make up the final on the following day. The two guys were overjoyed and relieved. So, they studied that night and went in the next day at the time that Aldric had told them. He placed them in separate rooms and handed each of them a test booklet and told them to begin.
They looked at the first problem, which was something simple about free radical formation and was worth 5 points. “Cool," they thought, “this is going to be easy. " They did that problem and then turned the page. They were unprepared, however, for what they saw on the next page. It said: (95 points) Which tire was flat?
The two students decided to visit their friends at the weekend beacause_______
A.they didn’t want to take the exam
B.they were invited by their friends
C.they were not worried about the exam at all
D.they forget the arrangement of the final exam
They didn’t return as planned because_______.A.they got lost on their way back

D.they couldn’t get help when they were in difficulty

B.He gave them different exam papers.
C.He asked a very surprising question.
D.He gave them very limited time to finish the paper.
When they took the first glance at the exam booklet, they thought_______.A.it was easy
B.it was too much
C.it was too difficiult
D.it was reasonable
It can be inferred from the passage that_______.A.the students didn’t like Professor Aldric
B.the two students had difficulties in their studies
C.Professor Aldric was very clever and humorous
D.the two students would surely pass the make-up exam

I'm in Paris, and a strangely quiet Paris it is. Nothing is going nowhere. If they're not on strike here, they're stuck in a traffic jam. It took me two hours to go two miles yesterday evening. And this morning many of the taxis, too, have joined in, leaving me with no alternative but to start walking. And it' s bitterly cold!
The strikes are serious protests about serious issues, but I'm struck, as so often on these occasions, by something much more mundane. People are once again talking to people; strangers are going out of their way to befriend strangers, allies for a week or two in their shared frustration. Parisian motorists, even, normally the most competitive of individualists, have been seen leaving notes in their parked cars saying where they are going and when they expect to leave in case anymore wants a lift.
Remove the technology of modem life, it seems, and we often start to be nice to one another again. Technology can isolate us, for all its benefits. It started, I guess, with the chimney. Before there were chimneys, we all had to huddle together in one room Just to keep warm, master and maid, cowman and son of the house. Then some unknown genius came up with the idea of the chimney, and the social stratification of society increased dramatically as all withdrew into their own quarters. Central heating, which is, more truthfully, decentralized heating, made it worse, and now we have our walkmans, our microwaves, or, if we' re really trendy, the Internet and e-mail. You can get by, these days, without actually speaking to anyone at all. Just the odd grunt to show that you' re alive !
I liked the survey which asked teenagers how they laid a table for a meal. Did they put the knife on the fight and the fork on the left, or did they put them both together? And 40 percent said one and 20 percent the other, but 40 percent didn't know! They had never sat down at a table together but had always, as they say, been grazers, helping themselves from the fridge and carrying the food off to their own comer to munch on their own.
If progress means that we don' t need to talk to each other anymore, then I'm getting worried. You can' t begin to love and befriend your neighbors if you never talk to them, and vice versa, they can't love you. It becomes a recipe for a world of solitaries. But most of us weren't destined to be hermits. People need people to be truly people, as the Parisians, in spite of all their frustrations, are discovering again this week. "Try walking instead" was my motto for this morning, but perhaps the motto for us all this festive month might be "Turn it off, whatever it is, and try talking instead!"
According to the author, the advent of modem technology may NOT______.
A.isolate us from the test of the society.
B.enable us to enjoy a much more convenient life.
C.leave people alone so that they may become truly people.
D.help people become grazers who are used to helping themselves from the fridge and carrying the food off to their own comer to munch on their own.

In this section. there are four passages followed by questions or un finished statements, each cuith four suggested answers marked[A], [B],[C] and [Dl. Choose the one that you think is the best answer. Mark your answers on Answer Sheet Two.
TEXT A
Let me speak first to parents. You are the ones who plant, or fail to plant, the seeds of character in your children. Try from the beginning to put into your children's minds the capacity to feel shame by letting them know that, just as there are actions for which they can win praise, so there are others ________ lying, cheating, stealing________ that are unacceptable and for which they will be punished.
As parents, you are not alone in your efforts to form. character. Organizations such as the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts teach accountability and strengthen it with pressure of equals. Churches are also strong helpers.
I remember clearly an event from my childhood. In our church's Sunday school playroom was a set of little lead cowboys and Indians. One day, I took one of them home, and that night my brother saw me playing with it. "I know where you got that," he said. "You stole it from the church. ,,
Stole it! From the church! Those words hit me like a thunderbolt. The anger of God, my mother's anger, the scorn of the world rose up like a terrifying wave in my mind. I ran a mile and a half to return the figure and all the way back home, where my mother put me to bed with a couple of beats for "cattin around " (到处乱跑). I never told her why I had left the house; I was too ashamed. Shame led straight to accountability, and I never again took anything that wasn't mine.
What about teachers? To them I'd say: your classroom is a small society. Don't excuse bad behavior. Get students to impose standards upon one another, and work to persuade the school administration to become firmer about discipline.
I've heard of high schools where the first time a student is caught with drugs, he's warned; the second time, he may be kept from school temporarily; the third, possibly driven away. To the principals of such schools I would say, "Why not suspend students the first time?" And I would quote a religious leader's words: "Punish severely the first offender, for in him lies the greatest hope of reform. "
Finally, a wise teacher might tell a high-school class: "If you choose to play with drugs, the police may never catch you. But your body is responsible to the laws of chemistry and biology. " What about law enforcement? If I could say just one thing to the designers of that system, it would be: restore fair, swift, sure punishment as one of the key supporters of accountability. There is nothing unreasonable about just punishment, but you'd never know it from watching our law carried out today. Criminals don't fear the law, because in most cases its punishment is so slow and weakened that any preventing effect is lost.
Which of the following is NOT true according to the author?
[A] Parents are very important in helping form. the children's character.
[B] One can have more than one way to shape character.
[C] Punishment should be carried out quickly.
[D] The author ran a mile and a half to avoid the shower of scolding.
