听力原文:M: It is good to have some company for the drive. It’s a long way to Edinburgh, and it’s very boring if you are on your own.
W: I’m really lucky you stopped and offered me a lift. I’ve been waiting for about two hours but no one seemed to be going my way.
M: Are you a student?
W: Yes, I’m a biology student in London University. I’m going up to Edinburgh for the festival, but it’s so expensive on the train that I decided to try and hitch a lift.
M: Well, you are lucky because I should have been going yesterday, but something happened to delay me so I postponed my trip until today.
W: Is it all right if I put my bag on the back seat?
M: Yes, of course.
W: It started to rain just as I left the house this morning and my clothes and shoes are wet through. Would you mind if I take off my shoes?
M: No, of course not. I don’t mind. Go ahead.
W: Thanks.
M: Oh, don’t forget to put your seat belt on! You can get fined nowadays, you know, for not wearing your seat belt.
W: Yes, sorry, I forgot. Could I open this window?
M: Well, I’d rather you don’t if you don’t mind. It gets very draughty when you open that window. But you can open the back window.
W: Is it all right if I go to sleep for a while?
M: Yes, of course. I’ll wake you up when we reach the next service station. I’ll need some coffee then.

This past fall semester, at Duke University, there were two students who were taking Organic Chemistry. They did pretty well on all of the tests and the midterms and labs, etc., such that going into the final they had a solid “A” . There two friends were so confident going into the final that the weekend before finals’ week, even though the Chemistry final was on Monday, they decided to go up to the University of Virginia and have a party with some friends up there. So they did this and had a great time. However, with the aftereffects of alcohol and everything, they overslept all day Sunday and didn’t make it back to Duke until early Monday morning.
Rather than taking the final then, what they did was to find Professor Aldric after the final and explain to him why they missed the final. They told him that they went up to UVA for the weekend, and had planned to come back in time to study, but they had a flat tire (爆胎)on the way back and didn’t have a spare and couldn’t get help for a long time and so were late getting back to campus.
Aldric thought this over and then agreed that they could make up the final on the following day. The two guys were overjoyed and relieved. So, they studied that night and went in the next day at the time that Aldric had told them. He placed them in separate rooms and handed each of them a test booklet and told them to begin.
They looked at the first problem, which was something simple about free radical formation and was worth 5 points. “Cool," they thought, “this is going to be easy. " They did that problem and then turned the page. They were unprepared, however, for what they saw on the next page. It said: (95 points) Which tire was flat?

Since the early 1980s, scientists have revealed some 40 human genes involved in cancer. These genes are essential for normal growth, but can be subverted to cause a tumor.
Dr. Jorge Yunis of the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis has found that 70 percent of oncogenes, or cancer-causing genes, are located near inherited weak points on chromosomes(染色体). Varying from individual to individual, vulnerable to chemical carcinogens(致癌剂), X rays and other cancer-inducing agents.
"If a chromosome snaps apart in the immediate vicinity of an oncogene," says Yunis, "normal genetic control mechanisms could break down and the stage would be set for the formation of cancer." Younis has shown that such a sequence occurs at the beginning of numerous leukemias (白血病), lymphomas(淋巴瘤) and some tumors of the lung, colon(结肠) and breast.
Yunis and other investigators have found that petroleum-based products--notably pesticides and insecticides-damage specific sites on at least two of the 23 pairs of human chromosomes that carry genetic information. Similarly, tobacco smoke tends to attack a part of another chromosome.
From paragraph 1, we know that some 40 genes involving in cancer are ______. ()
A.harmful to the human body
B.necessary to the human body
C.the elements that form. cancer
D.useless to the human body

To get a sense of how women have progressed in science, take a quick tour of the physics department at the University of California, Berkeley. This is a storied place, the 36 of some of the most important discoveries in modern science—starting with Ernest Lawrence’s invention of the cyclotron (回旋加速器) in 1931. A generation ago, female faces were 37 and, even today, visitors walking through the first floor of LeConte Hall will see a full corridor of exhibits 38 the many distinguished physicists who made history here, 39 all of them white males.
But climb up to the third floor and you’ll see a 40 display. There, among the photos of current faculty members and students, are portraits of the 41 head of the department, Marjorie Shapiro, and four other women whose research 42 everything from the mechanics of the universe to the smallest particles of matter. A sixth woman was hired just two weeks ago. Although they’re still only about 10 percent of the physics faculty, women are clearly a presence here. And the real 43 may be in the smaller photos to the right: graduate and undergraduate students, about 20 percent of them female. Every year Berkeley sends its fresh female physics PhDs to the country’s top universities. That makes Shapiro optimistic, but also 44 . “I believe things are getting better,” she says, “but they’re not getting better as 45 as I would like.”
