If you want stay young, sit down and have a good think. This is the research finding of a team of Japanese doctors, who say that most our brains are not getting enough exercises—and as a result, we are ageing unnecessarily soon.
Professor Taiju Matsuzawa wanted to find out why otherwise healthy farmers in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and reason at a relatively early age, and how the process of ageing could be slowed down.
With a team a colleague (同事) at Tokyo National University, he set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different ages and varying occupations.
" Computer technology enabled the researchers to obtain precise (精确的) measurements of the volume of the front and side sections of the brain, which relate to intellect (智能) and emotion, and determine the human character. " The rear section of the brain, which controls functions like eating and breathing, does not contract with age, and one can continue living without intellectual or emotional facilities.
Contraction of front and side parts—as cells die off—was observed in some subjects in their thirties, but it was still not evident in some sixty- and seventy-year-olds.
Matsuzawa concluded from his tests that there is a simple remedy to the contraction normally associated with age—using the head.
The findings show in general terms that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the towns. Those least at risk, says Matsuzawa, are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. White collar workers doing routine work in government offices are, however, as likely to have shrinking brains as the farm workers, bus drivers and shop assistants.
Matsuzawa's findings show that thinking can prevent the brain from shrinking. Blood must circulate properly in the head to supply the fresh oxygen the brain cells need. "The best way to maintain good blood circulation is through using the brain, " he says, "Think hard and engage in conversation. Don't rely on pocket calculators.
The team of doctors wanted to find out______.
A.how to make people live longer
B.the size of certain people's brains
C.which people are most intelligent
D.why certain people age sooner than others

听力原文:M: Hi, Susan, you are so lucky to be done with your final exams and term papers. I still have two more finals to take.
W: Really?
M: Yeah, so what are you doing this summer, anything special?
W: Well, actually yeah. My parents have always liked taking my brother and me to different places in our country. You know, places with historical significance. I guess they wanted to reinforce the stuff we learned in school about history. And so even though we are older now, they still do once in a while.
M: Oh so where are you going this summer?
W: Well, this summer it's finally going to be Yan'an.
M: Finally? You mean they never took you yet? I mean Yan'an; it's probably the most famous revolutionary base in the country. It's only a couple of hours ride by train. I think that would be one of the first places where they should have taken you. I have been there a couple of times.
W: We were going to go about five years ago, but something happened. I cannot remember what changed our plans. Yeah, don't ask me what it was, but we ended up not going anywhere that year. I hope that doesn't happen again this year.
M: I wrote a paper about the revolutionary activities in Yan'an last semester for a history class after I visited it for the fifth time last summer. The trip really helped a lot.
W: And now I'm even more excited to see the place.

The changes in globally averaged temperature that have occurred at the Earth's surface over the past century are similar in size and timing to those【1】by models that take into account: the combined influences of human factors and solar variability.
To【2】the question of attribution requires the【3】of more powerful and complex methods, beyond the use of global averages alone. New studies have focused on【4】maps or patterns of temperature change in【5】and in models. Pattern analysis is the cli-matologically equivalent of the more comprehensive tests in the medical analogy mentioned【6】, and makes it possible to achieve more definitive【7】of observed climate changes to a particular cause or causes.
The expected influence of human activities is thought to be much more complex than uniform. warming over the entire surface of the Earth and over the whole【8】cycle. Patterns of change over space and time therefore provide a more powerful【9】technique.
The basic idea【10】pattern-based approaches is that different【11】causes of climate change have different characteristic patterns of climate response or fingerprints. Attribution studies seek to 【12】a fingerprint match between the patterns of climate change【13】by models and those actually observed.
The most recent assessment of the science suggests that human activities have led to a discernible【14】on global climate and that these activities will have an increasing influence on future climate. The burning of coal, oil and natural gas, as well as various agricultural and industrial practices, are【15】the composition of the atmosphere and contributing to climate change. These human activities have led to increased atmospheric【16】of a number of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, methane and so on in the lower atmosphere.
Human activities, such as the burning of fossil, have also increased the【17】of small particles in the atmosphere. These particles can change the【18】of energy that is absorbed and reflected by the atmosphere. They are also believed to modify the【19】of air and clouds, changing the amount of energy that they absorb and reflect. Intensive studies of the climatic effects of these particles began only recently and the overall【20】is uncertain. It is likely that the net effect of these small particles is to cool the climate and to partially offset the warming of increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases.
