Electronic pets are sweeping China's large cities as they have elsewhere in Asia, as increasing numbers of young people go crazy about the imitation chickens, dogs and dinosaurs(恐龙).
The electronic pets, about the size of a watch, have the same qualifies as living animals. They eat, sleep and they can feel happy, angry and sad. When they are hungry, they call their owners to feed them. If the owners do not respond quickly, they get angry and refuse to eat. If the owners continuously neglect them, they refuse to eat and play with their owners until they die.
These chickens, dogs and dinosaurs are happy when their owners stop working to play games with them or feed them snacks. However, if they are fed too many snacks, they will get fat and sick.
By raising an electronic dog, animal lovers can be somewhat satisfied. However, as with real pets, not everyone loves these electronic animals.

Sea horses are unusual parents. The female sea horses lay the eggs, but unlike other creatures, it's the males that give birth to the young.
Male sea horses have a fold of skin on their bellies that forms pocket, called a brood pouch. During the breeding season, the sea horse's pouch swells to receive eggs. A female sea horse lays up to 200 eggs at a time in the pouch. Then she swims off, leaving her male partner to care for the developing eggs and give birth to young sea horses. The female will return everyday to check on her mate and the eggs, but she doesn't stay long, nor does she take part in the birth.
It takes from two to six weeks for the eggs in the male's pouch to develop. During this time the male avoids open water and hides in sea grass. His big pouch makes it difficult for him to swim, so the male often uses his tail to grasp a piece of sea grass. Firmly gripping the grass, he will stay perfectly still for hours or even days. The male sea horse will change his color to blend with his surroundings and avoid being seen by predators who will try to eat him or poke holes in his pouch to get the eggs.
The eggs hatch inside the male's pouch. When the babies begin moving around, the male sea horse knows it's time for them to be born. He grabs a sea grass stem with his tail and begins rocking, bending, and stretching his body so that the rest of the babies can be born. Sometimes he has to press his pouch against a rock Or some stiff seaweed to force the young out.
Sea horse babies are born in groups of five or more. Sometimes it takes two days for the father sea horse to give birth to all his young. He is very tired when it's over.
Soon after giving birth to one brood, the male will approach his mate and show her his empty pouch. This tells her he is ready to receive eggs again.
What part does the female sea horse play in having babies?
A.Receiving eggs.
B.Laying eggs.
C.Hatching eggs.
D.Protecting eggs.

听力原文:M: You think young people are given too much freedom nowadays, and that, as a result, they lost respect for their parents and their elders generally.
W: I don't think so. My parents never interfered with my plans too much. They advised me but never forced me to do anything I didn't want to do. I was allowed to take up the career I wanted. I think I respect and love them more for this.
M: Are you quite independent of them now?
W: Yes. As soon as I left high school and started my college studies as an elementary school teacher, I became independent financially. I have a government grant which is enough for my keep. But I still stay with them a lot as you know.
M: You seem very close to your parents.
W: I am. I know that many young people today say they have nothing in common with their parents. But I'm rather lucky because I get on very well with mine. What about you?
M: Well, we value family life very much in my country. I'm very fond of my family, but I don't always get on very well with them. They try to control me too much.
W: But they allowed you to come to study in England on your own.
M: Yes, but only after a lot of persuasion. Your parents treat you as an adult. Mine treat me as a child.
W: As I said, I'm lucky. Some English parents are like yours. They interfere too much and they're out of sympathy with our generation.

Passage Two:Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage.Sport is not only physically challenging, but it can also be mentally challenging. Criticism from coaches, parents, and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create an excessive amount of anxiety or stress for young athletes (运动员). Stress can be physical, emotional, or psychological, and research has indicated that it can lead to burnout. Burnout has been described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable.
The early years of development are critical years for learning abut oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place. Young athletes can, for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skills that will be used throughout their lives. Coaches and parents should be aware, at all times, that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children. Youngsters may take their parents’ and coaches’ criticisms to heart and find a flaw (缺陷) in themselves.
Coaches and parents should also be cautious that youth sport participation does not become work for children. The outcome of the game should not be more important than the process of learning the sport and other life lessons. In today’s youth sport setting, young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport. Following a game, many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and find fault with youngsters’ performances. Positive reinforcement should be provided regardless of the outcome. Research indicates that positive reinforcement motivates and has a greater effect on learning than criticism. Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.
第16题:An effective way to prevent the burnout of young athletes is ________.
A) to make sports less competitive
B) to make sports more challenging
C) to reduce their mental stress
D) to increase their sense of success

How do young children learn to have good values? How can parents teach their children about the importance of kindness, patience, and self-discipline? At a time when more and more parents worry about the negative and violent images(暴力形象) their children see on TV, in the movies and, on the Internet, some are turning to fairy tales(童话) as a way to teach their young ones how to behave in society.
Fairy tales were not always intended for children. We know this because some of these stories have existed for hundreds of years and were passed down from generation to generation through songs and drama. They were considered entertainment for everyone, not only for young people. In these ancient stories, the heroes were extremely clever, fiercely independent, and never gave up.Over the years, some of the heroes’ qualities and story lines have been changed to fit the times. Psychologists think that fairy tales have a positive influence on children because they present the two sides of good and evil very clearly. When children hear the stories, they develop sympathetic feelings for the heroic characters. In each tale, they can see that there are many different kinds of people in the world and that we all have a choice about what kind of person we want to be.We can choose to do good actions, rather that bad ones, in our lives.
What kind of values can children learn from fairy tales? In “The Princess and the Pea,” a poorly dressed girl who insists she is a princess is given a difficult test by the Queen. When she passes the test, we learn that she is rewarded because she stayed true to herself. In “The Little Mermaid,” the mermaid(美人鱼)who lives under the sea longs to be with the humans on land.Through her experiences, we learn about the importance of living with and accepting other cultures. In “Pinocchio,” a wooden puppet(木偶)turns into a boy when he finally learns how to tell the truth. Teaching values is the reason most often given for teaching literature and encouraging reading. These old stories can indeed teach us lessons about human relationships that are universal(普遍的) enough to survive throughout the centuries. This might be the reason why they have been around for so long and are unlikely to disappear any time soon.
