America has a new national park. It is the Great Basin. It is the first national park in the western state of Nevada. The new park is in the eastern part of Nevada, close to the border(边界) with Utah. It is far from any city.
An American explorer John Charles Fremont travelled through the area in the early 1800's. He found the land shaped like a bowl. So he named it the Great Basin. It is a land of unusual beauty and sharp differences.
For example, you can climb a mountain covered with green forests, then cool yourself in a field of snow as you arrive at the top. Here and there, sharp rocks push out through the snow. Among the rocks you might see homes of the golden hawk (鹰), a bird that was once in danger of dying out.
You can camp in a campground on the edge of Lehman Caves. These caves are a group of large underground rooms made of limestone (石灰石). You can walk through them for about a kilometre. Before the park opened, the caves were the centre of interests for anyone travelling through this area.
The state of Nevada has wanted a national park for more than 60 years. There have always been the opposite ideas from people who believes that a park would harm(损害) mining and agriculture. The bill that set up the park, however, promises that mines will remain open, and that sheep and cows will continue to feed on the mountainsides.
Lehman Caves are______.
A.about a kilometre each
B.separated from each other
C.rooms made of limestone
D.what interest visitors most

Before a new type of airplane goes into service, every part of it is tested again and again. But there are two tests that are more important than all the others.
The first is called the "tank test". A modem airplane must fly very high in the sky. Air must be pumped into the plane so that the passengers can breathe. The metal structure (结构) of the plane has to be very strong for this reason. When the plane is filled with air, the air presses against the skin of the plane inside. The pressure (压力) on a small window is like a huge foot that is trying to get out. If a small part of the plane were to fail, the plane would explode in the sky. To test the structure of the plane, the plane is lowered into a huge tank or container of water. Then it is filled with air. The pressure inside the plane is greater than it ever will be when it is high up in the air. Finally, there is an explosion. This does not cause so much damage inside the water tank as it would anywhere else. Engineers can discover which part of the plane has broken. Then that part is made stronger.
The most dangerous test happens when the new plane is going through test flights in the air. The test pilot must find out exactly what happens when the engines(发动机) are all shut off at once. The plane begins to fall like a stone. It is the pilot's job to find out how he can get control of the plane again. These two tests are examples of how planes are made safe before they ever carry passengers.
By doing the "tank test", the engineers can find out______.
A.the amount of air in the plane
B.the strength of the plane structure
C.the pressure inside and outside the plane
D.the power of the airplane engines

听力原文: Cosmetic surgery, also known as "plastic" surgery, is the science of changing the way a person looks by reshaping a part of the body. The science of beauty has changed with time, but the desire for beauty remains the same. Today I am going to talk about how the changes of fashion have led to the new modem age of cosmetic surgery.
In the 1700s, height and weight became an important part of beauty. During the time of the French Revolution, many women used to wear corsets, belts that made their waists appear much slimmer. In England in the 1500s, makeup became an important part of beauty. Some women used to paint their .face white. They thought this made them more attractive. Later, in North America, some women used to eat arsenic, a dangerous poison, to make their faces whiter. By the 1860s, American women started using makeup to make themselves more charming. In the 1890s, Americans discovered that bicycle tiding could actually improve their appearance! They exercised in order to look and feel better. The popularity of bicycle riding even led to a change in fashion. American women began to wear shorter skirts instead of the. traditional long, full ones.
Although diet and exercise are still popular ways of improving one's appearance, there are some parts of the body that cannot change without the help of a cosmetic surgeon. In the past, American women used to spend weeks repeating words that started with the "P" because they wanted to change the shape of their mouths. Today a cosmetic surgeon can reshape the nose or lips in a few hours. Rhinoplasty, the reshaping of nose, can greatly improve a person's image.
Surprisingly, cosmetic surgery has been used for centuries in China and India. Today it is used in many countries to improve the outlook of people who have been hurt in fires or in car accidents It is also used to improve the appearance of children who are born with physical problem.
Questions:
15.What is the topic of the lecture?
16.What did women in North America do to improve their appearance in 1890s?
17.What do you think is the speaker's attitude towards rhinoplasty?
18.Which statement is NOT true according to the lecture?
(35)
A.Why people will take plastic surgery.
B.How cosmetics develop in its long history.
C.How the change of fashion led to the development of cosmetic surgery.
D.How people from all over the world make themselves look better.

The coast of the State of Maine is one of the most irregular in the world. A straight line running from the southernmost coastal city to the northernmost coastal city would measure about 225 miles. If you followed the coastline between these points, you would travel more than ten times as far. This irregularity is . the result of what is called a drowned coastline. ______【46】. At that time, the whole area that is now Maine was part of a mountain range that lowered above the sea. As the glacier (冰川) descended, however, it expended enormous force on those mountains, and they sank into the sea.
As the mountains sank, ocean water charged over the lowest arts of the remaining land, forming a series of twisting inlets and lagoons (咸水湖) . The highest parts of the former mountain range, nearest the shore, remained as islands. ______【47】Marine fossils found here were 225 feet above sea level, indicating the level of the shoreline prior to the glacier.
The 2, 500-mile-long rocky coastline of Maine keeps watch over nearly two thousand islands. Many of these islands are tiny and uninhabited, but many are home to thriving communities. Mt. Desert Island is one of the largest, most beautiful of the Maine coast islands. Measuring 16 miles by 12 miles, Mt. Desert Island was essentially formed as two distinct islands. ______【48】.
For years, Mt. Desert Island, particularly its major settlement, Bar Harbor, afforded summer homes for the wealthy. Recently though, Bar Harbor has become a rapidly growing arts community as well. But the best part of the island is the unspoiled forest land known as Acadia National Park. Because the island sits on the boundary line between the temperate (温带) and sub-Arctic zones, the island supports the plants and animals of both zones as well as beach, inland , and alpine (高山 的) plants. ______【49】The establishment of Acadia National Park in 1916 means that this natural reserve will be perpetually available to all people, not just the wealthy. Visitors to Acadia may receive nature instruction from the park naturalists as well as enjoy camping, cycling, and boating. Or they may choose to spend time at the archeological museum, learning about the Stone Age inhabitants of the island.
The best view on Mt. Desert Island is from the top of Cadillac Mountain. ______【50】. From the summit, you can gaze back toward the mainland or out over the Atlantic Ocean and contemplate the beauty created by a retreating glacier.
A. It also lies in a major bird migration lane and is a resting spot for many birds.
B. Mt. Desert Island is one of the most famous of all of the islands left behind by the glacier.
C. The wealthy residences of Mt. Desert Island selfishly keep it to themselves.
D. The term comes from the activity of the Ice Age.
E. This mountain rises 1, 532 feet, making it the highest mountain on the Atlantic seashore.
F. It is split almost in half by Somes Sound, a deep and narrow stretch of water seven miles long.
