Do you know How to touch people correctly? Chinese girls often walk arm in arm with their friends. South Americans sometimes hold your arm when they talk to you, so you can’t move away! But in Britain many people don’t like other people to touch them at all.
Do you look at people when you talk? In some places, it isn’t polite to look at people when you talk, but in other countries it isn’t polite to look somewhere else. In Britain and the US, people usually look at each other when they talk.
And how do you say goodbye? That’s easy, wave(挥手) to say goodbye. But be careful! In Greece, it’s not at all polite! In fact, it’s very rude!

For years, studies have found that first-generation college students-those who do not have a parent with a college degree-lag other students on a range of education achievement factors. Their grades are lower and their dropout rates are higher. But since such students are most likely to advance economically if they succeed in higher education, colleges and universities have pushed for decades to recruit more of them. This has created “a paradox” in that recruiting first-generation students, but then watching many of them fail, means that higher education has “continued to reproduce and widen, rather than close” achievement gap based on social class, according to the depressing beginning of a paper forthcoming in the journal Psychological Sciense.
But the article is actually quite optimistic, as it outlines a potential solution to this problem, suggesting that an approach(which involves a one-hour, next-to-no-cost program) can close 63 percent of the achievement gap(measured by such factors as grades)between first-generation and other students.
The authors of the paper are from different universities, and their findings are based on a study involving 147 students(who completed the project)at an unnamed private university.First generation was defined as not having a parent with a four-year college degree Most of the first-generation students(59.1 percent) were recipients of Pell Grants,a federal g rant for undergraduates with financial need, while this was true only for 8.6 percent of the students wit at least one parent with a four-year degree.
Their thesis-that a relatively modest intervention could have a big impact-was based on the view that first-gene ration students may be most lacking not in potential but in practical knowledge about how to deal with the issues that face most college students They cite past resea rch by several authors to show that this is the gap that must be narrowed to close the achievement gap.
Many first-gene ration students”struggle to navigate the middle-class culture of higher education, learn the‘rules of the game,’and take advantage of college resources,” they write And this becomes more of a problem when collages don’t talk about the class advantage and disadvantages of different groups of students Because US colleges and universities seldom acknowledge how social class can affect students’ educational experience, many first-gene ration students lack sight about why they a re struggling and do not unde rstand how students’ like them can improve.
Recruiting more first-generation students has______ .
A.reduced their d ropoutrates
B.narrowed the achievement
C.missed its original pu rpose
D.depressed college students
The study suggests that most first-gene ration students______ .A.study at private universities
B.are from single-pa rent families
C.are in need of financial support
D.have failed their collage
The author of the paper believe that first-generation students______ .A.a re actually indifferent to the achievement gap
B.can have a potential influence on other students
C.may lack opportunities to apply for research projects
D.are inexperienced in handling their issues at college
We may infer from the last paragraph that______ .A.universities often rect the culture of the middle-class
B.students are usually to blame for their lack of resources
C.social class g realy helps en rich educational experiences
D.colleges are partly responsible for the problem in question
The author of the research article are optimistic because______ .A.the problem is solvable
B.their approach is costless
C.the recruiting rate has increased
D.their finding appeal to students

Finding Friends on the Internet Many students want to find friends on the Internet as a way of practicing their language skills and learning more about new cultures. With the Internet, finding friends has become much easier. Here are some tips on finding on the Internet:
◇ Search the Internet for reputable(声誉好的)services. Look for reviews of such sites to learn more about others student’experiences. Don’t join a service until you have done research.
◇ Check to see if you can use a nickname, instead of your real name, to protect your number and birthday. ◇ Stop contact with others if you feel uncomfortable with the topics of the conversation.
◇ Try to use the language you are studying when communicating with others. Asking appropriate questions will also help you learn about other cultures.
Remember:
To understand a whole culture, you have to talk to many people.

Mobile Phones:Are They about to Transform. Our Lives? We love them so much that some of us sleep with them under the pillow, yet we are increasingly concerned that we cannot escape their electronic reach. We use them to convey our most intimate secrets, yet we worry that they are a threat to our privacy. We rely on them more than the lnternet to cope with modern life, yet many of us don’t believe advertisements saying we need more advanced services.
Sweeping aside the doubts that many people feel about the benefits of new third generation phones and fears over the health effects of phone masts(天线竿),a recent report clains that the long-term effects of new mobile technologies will be entirely positive so long as the public can be convinced to make use of them.Research about users of mobile phones reveals that the mobile has already moved beyond being a mere practical communications tool to become the backbone (支柱)of modern social life, from love affairs to friendship to work. One female teacher,32,told the researchers:“I love my phone. It’s my friend.”
The close relationship between user and phone is most pronounced among teenagers, the report says, who regard their mobiles as an expression of their identity. This is partly because mobiles are seen as being beyond the control of parents. But the researchers suggest that another reason may be that mobiles, especially taxt messaging, are seen as a way of overcoming shyness.“Texting is often used for apologies,to excuse lateness or to communicate other things that make us uncomfortable,”the report says,The impact of phones, however, has been local rather than global, supporting existing friendships and networks, rather than opening users to a new broader community.Even the language of texting in one area can be incomprehensible to anybody from another area.
Among the most important benefits of using mobile phones, the report claims, will be a vastly improved mobile infrastructure(基础设施),providing gains throughout the economy, and the provision of a more sophisticated location-based services for users. The report calls on govemment to put more effort into the delivery of services by bobile phone, with suggestions including public transport and traffic information and doctors’ text messages to remind patients of appointments.“I love that idea,”one user said in an interview.“It would mean I wouldn’t have to write a hundred messages to myself.”
There are many other possibilities. At a recent trade fair in Sweden,a mobile navigation product was launched. When the user enters a destination,a route is automatically downloaded to their mobile and presented by voice, pictures and maps as they drive. In future, these devices will also be able to plan around congestion(交通堵塞)and road works in real time.Third generation phones will also allow for remote monitoring of patients by doctors. In Britain scientists are developing a asthma(哮喘)management solution, using mobiles to detect early signs of an attack.

A.We can’t live without them.
B.We are worried about using them so much.
C.We have contradictory feelings about them.
D.We need them more than anything else to deal with modem life.
