Switzerland lies at the heart of Europe. To its west is France, to the north is Germany, to the east lies Austria and to the south, Italy. All of these countries have had an influence on Switzerland' s history, culture and language.
Switzerland covers an area of 41,288 square km. Its magnificent mountains and lakes draw many visitors each year, and it is famous around the world for its clock- and watch-making industries, its chocolate, its cheese and its banking system.
Some 70 percent of the land area of Switzerland is mountainous. This has made the country difficult to invade and is one of the reasons why it has avoided the angry territorial wars that have plagued other countries in Europe. It has not been involved in a foreign war since the year 1515 and has maintained an armed neutrality since 1815. Individuals have traditionally offered their services to the armies of other countries. Swiss mercenaries have gained a reputation for discipline and have been well paid for their services.
The snow-capped Alps is the highest mountain region in Europe and is popular with climbers and hill walkers, who come to the area in summer. The Alps dominates the central and southern part of the country and is home to Europe' s highest mountain, Mont Blanc. The less dramatic Jura Mountains lie to the northwest. In between these two mountainous areas lies the central Swiss plateau, which is about 50 km wide and runs from southwest to northeast. The major urban centers are situated here, on the shores of Switzerland' s major lakes. They include the capital city of Bern, the largest city, Zurich, and the major cultural, financial and manufacturing center of Geneva. The cities of Basel and Lausanne are also important manufacturing centers.
Most people in Switzerland live in small towns, despite the importance of the cities. People who live in the countryside and in the alpine valleys work mainly on small family farms, rearing sheep, goats, pigs, cows and chickens and growing such crops as wheat, potatoes, apples and pears. The land is generally poor, however, and the climate is not favorable to agriculture on a large scale. Switzerland must import most of its food.
The Swiss have made good use of their country's scant natural resources. Many rivers and mountain waterfalls have been harnessed to provide cheap hydroelectric power, although there are also several nuclear power stations. Switzerland's heavily forested hills and mountain slopes provide timber and furniture industries, and also for paper pulp. Much of its milk output is turned into Swiss "mousetrap" cheese, famous for its holes and its distinctive flavor.
Zurich is______in Switzerland.
A.the largest city
B.the financial center
C.a manufacturing center
D.famous for its cheese

The idea that "parents don't matter"— shorthand for the view that how parents treat their children has no effect on the kids' behavior, values, achievements and other outcomes—just won't go away. I can【62】believe it's been more than 10 years since I wrote about the【63】claim that only genes and peers【64】children; once parents contribute an egg or sperm, they have no effect on how their kids【65】
So I was【66】by what's being called "the largest meta-analysis ever conducted on the association between parenting styles and delinquency (犯罪,尤指青少年). " The meta. analysis, in the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, looked at 161 published and unpublished studies【67】the question, and found that how well parents【68】their children, whether they expressed rejection or hostility, and a number of other【69】indeed had an effect.
What's particularly interesting is the【70】of the effect. An association can be statistically significant without being【71】significant; that is, there can be true cause-and-effect, but a tiny effect. Not so in this case.【72】kids for good behavior. had an effect size of 11%, for instance; not huge, but not tiny (it means that 11% of the difference between kids' levels of delinquency is due to whether their parents rewarded them for good behavior, something that reduces delinquency). Being authoritative also【73】delinquency, again with an effect size of 11%,【74】being authoritarian (独裁) increased delinquency, with an effect size of 12%. Put the two together and being authoritarian as opposed to authoritative【75】for a swing of 23%. Physical【76】and verbal aggression also were associated with more delinquency.
The "parents don't matter" school might【77】that little delinquents-to-be bring out the worst in parents, who turn authoritarian. It is the kids'【78】tendencies that cause later delinquency, according to this argument, not how parents【79】. The【80】with this claim is the many studies showing that whether you are an authoritarian or an authoritative parent "is most often determined before your first kid is even born, and is highly【81】upon your own experience of discipline.., and your general political/personality orientation," as clinical psychologist Nestor Lopez-Duran wrote.

To begin with, moral values in America are like those in any culture. But the stories and traditions that teach them are unique to each culture. Not only that, but culture has an effect on how people show these virtues.
One of the most basic moral values for Americans is honesty. The wall-known legend about George Washington and a cherry tree teaches this value clearly.
Another virtue Americans respect is perseverance. Remember Aesop’s fable about the turtle and the rabbit that had a race The rabbit thought he could win easily, so he took a sleep. But the turtle finally won because he did not give up.
Compassion(同情心)may be the queen of American virtues. In 1992, people in Iowa sent truckloads of water to help Floridians hit by a hurricane. The next summer, during the mid-west of flooding, Florida returned the favor.
There are more moral values honored by Americans. Courage, responsibility, loyalty, gratitude and many others could be discussed. But no matter how long or short the list is, moral values are invaluable. They are the foundation of American cultures--and any culture.
